ATK's 4th Anniversary

I've been blogging for four years today. It's kind of hard to believe it's been that long. It's also amazing how many people I know who have started blogging in that time! I love that.

I still enjoy this pastime, especially the element of staying in touch with family and friends, and even meeting new friends. That's been really cool.

Just checked my stats and saw that this is my 1424th post. That's almost one a day for four years! I'm surprised it's that many, but of course, posting my daily pics last year contributed largely to that number.

Thank you all for being here. I really like having these conversations with you (even if I don't "hear" your side of it)!

Overzealous security

To all my friends who use Blogger: I'm unable to read or post comments on your blogs because the comment pages are being blocked by a security filter at my workplace. bummer.

Update, Feb 21: Security realized the error of their ways. Or, it was just a technical glitch. Either way, I can see/post comments again!

Bedtime. But first...

What an excellent evening! I attended A Reading By Leeann Minogue at the Shu-Box Theatre (U of R campus), hosted by the Saskatchewan Writers Guild. Theatre students and a local actor read a couple scenes from Leeann's hit play, Dry Streak, as well as some partial scenes from a play she's working on. The new play sounds fantastic! Leeann also answered some questions, discussed her writing process a bit, and explained how and why she started writing Dry Streak. I enjoyed it very much. (By the way, Access filmed this event, so those of you in Regina with Access can see it on the community channel.)

It was great to see Leeann again and it was also cool to meet a fellow blogger, Sally, whom I hadn't met in person before (you may have seen her comments here lately). When the Regina Little Theatre produced Dry Streak last fall, Sally played the role of Denise. (I didn't see that production, but I saw Dry Streak performed in Milestone earlier in 2007.) We all went to the Hotel Sask for a drink afterwards, along with a few other friends and family of Leeann's.

I was hoping to start a new project on this blog Feb 1, but due to technical difficulties and mostly a serious lack of time this week (especially tomorrow), I probably won't be able to post the first of this project until Saturday. Stay tuned...

P.S. (6:55 a.m. Feb 1) I should mention, Neil didn't have such an excellent evening while I was out. He had a terrible time putting all three girls to bed. In the past, Neil has been able to put them all to bed quite successfully on his own; much more quickly than I ever could. It seems this has changed. He had the same problem last Thursday when I played volleyball. The problem is none of them will stay in their bed or their room, so it's much more difficult for one parent to put them all to bed. Thankfully, we're both here almost every night. Georgia does not need a long nap in the afternoon anymore, but she usually has one at the babysitter, and Madeline doesn't need one at all, but since she goes to preschool in the morning now, she often falls asleep in the afternoon. Sophia has never needed much sleep. The result is three kids who are determined to stay up much later than we'd like. One can only hope this is temporary, although it may be years, not months, before we can eliminate the nap problem altogether! At least we know Madeline will be in afternoon kindergarten in the fall.

It's a wrap

One year later, my photo-a-day project is finally complete. Wow. What a year! I've heard from so many of you -- both in person and in writing -- that you've enjoyed my daily photos. Thank you SO much! I'm glad you'll liked them, and I loved hearing from you.

What can I say? I gained so much from this experience... an entire year in my life, my family's life, captured in pictures -- from the highs to the lows, from the interesting or exciting to the utterly mundane -- it's all there. And it's all dear to me. Your kind words and all the photos that I may not have taken otherwise (that is SO key to this project: many photos only exist now because I forced myself to photograph something, anything, every single day)... well, they almost make me want to continue. Almost.

No, it's time to wrap this one up. I need a change, and I'll enjoy my freedom from that specific daily commitment. It was very challenging some days! And time consuming. Absolutely. But. BUT. Also very rewarding.

It's incredibly cool to be able to recall something about each and every day of an entire year. Those photos allow me to do that. I love seeing those photos in rotation on my computer screen saver and remembering all those days.

I also enjoy seeing large batches of my daily pics in chronological order. I realize you haven't had that experience on this blog, so I've uploaded the photos to Flickr. If you're interested, check out Daily Pics 2007 (there's a new link on the right sidebar too). I think it's neat to see the progression. The seasons change and my little girls grow a year older. Even our home changes a little. All in a big block of photos.

I know I said I was working on something for 2008. I still am. I'm fine-tuning my plans right now, and more importantly, taking a little break from having a specific posting regimen. Stay tuned.

Oh, and I will be posting some photos in the meantime. I just haven't had time!

Daily pic: 05 Dec 07

This is my book! It's called 9 states, 27 days, 8700 kms, and it's comprised of all my blog posts -- including all of your wonderful comments -- from our trip to Texas last year! It was such a great trip and I spent a lot of time recording all the details each and every day. I wanted to have a hard copy of all those words. The pages shown are from the day we left, December 6, 2006.

To do this, I used a service called Blurb. Blurb offers free software called Booksmart that can "slurp" blogs into book format. Isn't that cool? You can choose the elements you wish to include (text, photos, link URLs, and comments), do some of your own formatting if you like, and then order a hard or soft cover book! This one is soft cover and 60 pages. I arranged the book so each day of our trip had its own two-page spread and I only included the one photo I had posted on that day. (I have yet to do a photo album from that trip, but I still hope to do that someday. At least I have the journal now!). It cost me only $28.80 U.S. after a $7.00 discount on shipping because I had a coupon (I signed up last year and they send coupons once in awhile). I ordered my book on November 20 and it came yesterday.

...that I enjoy and appreciate every comment I receive? I don't think I have, so I just want to say THANKS! to all of you who pop in and drop me a line once in awhile. You make my day!

Also, speaking of comments, Des asked me awhile back if I was planning to continue my photo-a-day project in 2008... The answer is no (but I won't rule it out for 2009!). Though I've enjoyed doing it for the most part and I'm so very glad to have captured this year in photos (I'm planning to have all my daily pics printed into a simple picture book for posterity), I will enjoy taking a break from that particular daily commitment. However... I am cookin' up something else for next year. You'll just have to wait and see!

I'm thankful for that.

My photo-a-day project

I'm planning to take (and post) a photo a day in 2007. Why? Good question. Because I have all kinds of spare time on my hands? Definitely not.

Basically, I just want to do it. It's a personal challenge. (Some people challenge themselves to run a marathon... I don't.) I love taking photos, "playing" with them on my computer, and posting them. I enjoy looking at my photos (I hope I'm not the only one, but if I am, so be it). I hope I'll learn how to take better photos. At the very least, I'll have a visual record of 2007 (oh, and something to post when I've got nothing to say).

I know it'll be challenging and I'm sure I won't feel like doing it some days, but I think it'll be worthwhile and fun for the most part. I've been thinking of doing this for a couple of months now. When I looked for similar endeavors online and found Project 365, I was even more inspired to do it.

I may not actually post a photo every day as that could be awfully demanding, but I will take photos every day and post later if need be. I also don't know if I'll post each photo right here or if I'll set up a separate blog or Flickr site for this purpose. In any case, I don't feel like searching for another method right now, so I'm going to start putting them here.

My camera has been acting up lately (almost certainly related to me dropping it on a hard floor twice in the past year) and I sure hope it doesn't quit working completely. That could really throw a wrench into my project! Wish me luck. I'm not quite ready to buy a new camera (it would be nice though!).

The Cold Shots song

I've been trying to win an iPod Nano from Molson Canadian Cold Shots (enter once a day), and I like the song that plays on the site. So much so that I had to look for it on the internet. Apparently it's an unreleased remix of a song by Montreal rapper, B-U The Knowledgist. Lucky for me, a resourceful Calgarian made an mp3 of the song and put it on his blog.

To download: on a PC, right click on the link to the song (above) and select "Save target as..."; on a Mac, press option and click on the link. I just learned how to do that.

Is this hip-hop? I'm so clueless about that genre.

True story

I clicked on The Monster Blog (among a list of recently updated weblogs) this morning and was disappointed to find out it was not about monsters. A blog about monsters would be a lot more fun, don't you think?

I guess I was in that frame of mind after looking for a haunted house coloring page for the girls. I found one and lots of other Halloween coloring pages here.

25 months of memories

Over the past couple of days, I've been copying all of my blog posts into documents that I'll archive on CD. I've written so much over the past 25 months and I couldn't bear to lose it -- especially everything I've recorded about the girls (not that I expect Typepad to crash or anything, but you never know). As I copied and pasted, I noticed so many things that put a smile on my face or made me laugh. Heck, it's even good to look at the tough times and see how things have changed for the better. I'm so glad I do this blogging thing.

I almost forgot

It's been two whole years since I started blogging! My first post was on 04-04-04.

I'm so glad I 'discovered' this medium back then. I love writing and posting pictures here, and I really appreciate all of the wonderful feedback I've received. Thanks everyone!

Eight months

Well, it doesn't look like my belly has grown much since my seven-month photo, but this feels larger to me. I'm very interested to find out how much Georgia has grown over the past two weeks. We have an ultrasound tomorrow and I expect they'll do measurements at this one as they measure bi-weekly.

Big day tomorrow: Work from 8:00 a.m. to noon, including my annual performance evaluation and our annual Marketing Christmas snack day. I'm taking Cinnamon Pull-Apart Bread which I'll make in the morning. I only make things like this when I can share with lots of people! After lunch, all four of us are going to Sophia's preschool Christmas party from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. (Madeline also has a cold now but is well enough to go). They'll both get gifts from Santa (which I provided on Monday). We're supplying juice and cups for the party too. Finally, we have our doctor appointment at 4:15 p.m. (we'll be taking the girls back to Sharon's). Thank goodness the evening is free!

New colours

My blog looked pretty much the same for over a year, so it seemed like time for a change. I'm experimenting now, so it may change again. We'll see.

P.S. I found this fun colour scheme at The Return of Design, a cool web design site I happened upon today. I'm sure I'll be going back for more design tidbits.

MIT Weblog Survey

I just took an interesting MIT Weblog Survey being conducted for a Ph.D. dissertation. I learned about it from Kelly. Over 54000 webloggers have responded so far. Wow. I wish I could have used an online survey for my thesis research! Beats the heck out of visiting high schools in person and asking (mostly uninterested) students to fill out a paper survey.

1st Anniversary

This is the one-year anniversary of my blog! My goodness, a year goes by so quickly now!

I have lots to say about the weekend too, but I can't type very well--and probably shouldn't be typing at all--because I sprained my right thumb playing volleyball tonight. It hurts quite a bit. Yes, just in time for our playoffs this weekend. :-(

Okay, I have ice on it now and I'm typing with just my left hand. Work will be interesting...all I do is type and mouse with my right hand--all day, everyday.

I have pictures to show too! Who wants to see Sophia holding a Boa Constrictor?! I'm sorry, you'll have to wait a bit...

Update 9:45 pm: Writing is much more painful and difficult than typing. Have I ever mentioned how extremely right-hand dominant I am? My left hand is practically useless--except to hold a baby (2-year old) while I do things using my right hand. This is not good.
